Travelling via Dunkirk, you’ll arrive in the picturesque town of Valkenburg for a four-night stay—famous for its unique underground Christmas markets. Wander through the atmospheric Municipal Caves, where dozens of stalls offer handcrafted gifts and festive decorations, while above ground the town sparkles with seasonal cheer, including Santa’s Village and Europe’s largest nativity scene.
Your festive adventure continues with a visit to Aachen, where the historic squares surrounding the cathedral come alive with dazzling lights, traditional market stalls, and the irresistible scents of gingerbread, marzipan, and warming mulled wine. You’ll also explore Cologne, home to some of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets, set against the breathtaking backdrop of its iconic cathedral.
With time to explore, and indulge in all things Christmas, this delightful winter getaway is the perfect way to start the festive season.

Itinerary

Day 1 Morning departure to Dover for the sea crossing to Dunkirk, continuing the journey to Valkenburg for a stay of four nights.

Day 2 Today travel to Aachen where the squares and streets around the Cathedral and the Town Hall are transformed into a paradise of lights and colours, festive sounds, smells and market stalls. Enjoy a wide variety of Printen and other cakes, biscuits, gingerbread, marzipan bread and of course glühwein.

Day 3 Valkenburg at leisure. Visit the oldest and most visited underground market in the Municipal Caves. With over 50 stalls with beautiful decorations and Christmas gifts. Above ground see the festive decorations in Santa’s village and marvel at the largest crib in Europe. NB: Entrance is included for the Municipal Caves only.

Day 4 A visit to Cologne with its seven Christmas markets around the city. There are four large markets at Cologne Cathedral with stalls arranged around a huge Christmas tree, the Alter Markt, the Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz. The aroma of foods and glühwein will waft through the alleyways whilst you shop and explore.

Day 5 After breakfast, depart the hotel and commence the homeward journey.

A stylish hotel with a rich history. It was originally a farm during the 18th Century and is built on the remains of the city walls. Since 1920 it has been run as a hotel. The Walram is renowned for its special atmosphere, and exudes a unique ambiance of nostalgia. The hotel lies close to the picturesque town centre and amenities. All rooms are en-suite with, tea/coffee making facilities, TV and hairdryer. Lift, cosy bar, restaurant and indoor swimming pool.
