Holiday Itinerary

Monday - We travel to Dover for the ferry crossing to France and make a stop in the charming walled town of Montreuil sur Mer with its beautiful old houses, imposing ramparts and cobbled streets. An ancient royal city in the time of the Capets, Hugo wrote Les Miserables here and its the original home of The Roux brothers. Then a short hop to arrive at the Chateau late afternoon to meet your hosts Tim and Margreeth and settle into your rooms before dinner (cooked by Tim). After dinner our hosts will give us a talk on the history of their Chateau and how it, and they, came to feature in the Escape to the Chateau DIY Series.

Tuesday - After our continental breakfast, served in the Chateau conservatory (artisinale baguettes and croissants, jams, meats, cereals and a selection of cheeses), Tim joins us for a guided tour of the local area and gives us an insight into some history, whilst keeping us entertained with his anecdotes! Today, amongst other stops  we plan to visit: Le Tréport, a bustling port where we enjoy a ride on the funicular, up to the highest cliff top in France and take in some of the most spectacular coastlines you’ll ever see. Mers-les-Bains, a seaside town noted for the Belle Epoque villas facing the sea built at the end of the 19th century when the craze for 'sea-bathing began'. Saint Valery, the unspoilt jewel in the Picardie crown.  William launched his invasion fleet to Hastings from here,  Joan of Arc was imprisoned in the tower and the ancient city remains largely intact. We have time for coffee and a look around. Tim must leave us to return to the Chateau to prepare tonight’s dinner but we’ll round off the day with a steam train ride to Le Crotoy on the Chemin de Fer around Le Baie de Somme, a Unesco heritage site and area of outstanding natural beauty with it’s marshes, seals, birds and wildlife. After dinner tonight, Tim, who used to be in a successful band called Fragment, will entertain us with a good old fashioned sing-a-long!

Wednesday - Today, we allow Tim & Margreeth a day off as we head off to one of the many regular markets or Brocante shops that abound in the area where you may find a bargain or two! We then spend the afternoon in Jules Verne’s Amiens with its beautiful cathedral, the pretty little houses of the medieval Saint Leu district, bars, restaurants, antique stores and the floating Roman gardens of the Hortillonnages.

Thursday - Sadly, we have to say goodbye to Tim and Margreeth and head for home. We make a stop in Le Touquet, a lovely chic resort on the coast of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais before returning to Calais for the return crossing to the UK.
