Itinerary

Raby Castle © Raby Estates_-_Peter Gunton Day 1 Morning departure for the journey north and to the hotel for a four night stay.

Day 2 Today you make the short journey to Auckland Castle. This proud home of the Bishops of Durham stands as one of the best- preserved palaces in Europe and has undergone major renovations to bring it back to its former splendour. Explore the castle and gardens where produce from the garden is incorporated into your menu at the hotel. This afternoon we have included an all-access ticket to the Auckland’s Projects other attractions where you are free to enjoy at leisure.

Day 3 Off to Raby Castle, one of the finest medieval castles to remain in Britain and the home of the Vane family since 1626. After the visit you head to Barnard Castle, a little town where Dickens immortalised ‘Dothboys Hall’, with time for lunch, and then onto Wolsingham where you will enjoy a return train ride on the heritage Weardale line to Stanhope taking in the beautiful views of the Durham Dales.

Day 4 Head north to the historic city of Durham, well known for its huge cathedral overlooking the river and the beautiful cityscape. Take a stroll along the riverside, lunch in one of the many cosy city cafes or visit the cathedral with its great architecture and peaceful surroundings.

Day 5 After breakfast, depart the hotel and commence the homeward journey

Situated just a short drive from Bishop Auckland and recently undergone a full renovation since being taken over by the Auckland Project. All bedrooms are en-suite with TV, telephone, WiFi, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. Bar, restaurant, garden area and terrace.

NB: There is no lift, and rooms will possibly be located over two floors in the Courtyard. There are ground floor rooms available on request.
